Repair or Replace?

Some damage is a straightforward patch. Other times, replacing part of the drywall is the better fix. The right call depends on the condition of the area.

  • Patch it

Usually the right fit for small holes, cracks, dents, nail pops, and isolated wall patches where the surrounding drywall is still solid.

  • Replace part of it

Often the better option when drywall or sheetrock is soft, broken, badly stained, or too damaged for a good, lasting repair.

  • Check the cause first

If the same crack, seam, or ceiling damage keeps coming back, it may point to moisture, movement, or an older failed patch that needs a different fix.

We had a roof leak that pooled atop the drywall in our bedroom. Saggy, drippy, and a bit unnerving. We had the roof fix and called The Wall Doctor to repair the ceiling. A home audio subcontractor used them 20 years ago to fix this very section of drywall when they had to rip it out to fix some wiring. They did such a nice job, we decided to call them again to fix it again. Rob fielded the call and was awesome and responsive. I took some photos and we agreed on the scope. He put us on the calendar within a couple weeks and a two person crew showed up on time, friendly, and very particular. They laid brown butcher paper and plastic in all the right places. The crew assessed the damage and were surgical in the removal of the bad stuff. They drywalled, mudded, primed, and painted in about two and a half days and it's like new. We also had them fix some smaller drywall issues around the house and they matched four different paint colors perfectly and left it all good as new. I won't hesitate to call again. These folks do it all with a smile, sense of urgency, and top quality.

Short version: We are definitely adding The Wall Doctor to our preferred contractors list, in case we need them again. We recently had an electrician replace a couple aging bathroom fans with the understanding that they would likely need to cut some holes in the drywall that we would then have to hire someone else to patch up. A few years back when we had our furnace replaced, the HVAC installer had The Wall Doctor repair a couple openings made in our ceiling and they seemed to do excellent work, so we decided to try them out again for this work. Rob helped get us a quote and set up our appointment, then Raymundo did all the repairs. Both were great to work with. Raymundo fixed up both of the bathroom fan locations (including shoring up a fairly wonky installation by the electrician at one of the fans - see photos) and helped seal the fan housings to the drywall (which the electricians hadn't done and hadn't mentioned needed to be done, even though it was in the fan manufacturer's installation instructions). We also had him repair/touch up a handful of cracks in the interior paint/drywall that we had been trying our best to ignore since we moved in a number of years ago. Each of these spots looks so much better now, as if the cracks were never there. There were three of us at home for most of the day while Raymundo was doing all of this work, but he did a great job of keeping each of the areas quite clean during the work and at the end of the day while also minimizing his impact on us being able to go about our days at home. He was also very patient with us poking are heads in from time to time and answering all of our questions. Thank you, Raymundo and The Wall Doctor!

We have used The Wall Doctor several times in the last 15 years. For minor drywall patching to finishing portions of the basement, including a basement ceiling with sound insulation, basement room drywall, and drywall finishing. They are very efficient and the work is very neat and professional. They have been punctual and estimates have been right-on. We liked how they wrapped a long basement duct that went below the ceiling, encasing it in drywall so it looked good, with two exposed vents where there were existing vents. Our basement is challenging, as the foundation height varies from the floor to the ceiling in parts because we are on a hill. I also liked how they have been responsive to putting insulation in the ceiling to help reduce noise from the first floor, and in the walls to help keep noise from the furnace. The finishing work was top-notch as well. We had them patch drywall holes in eight places throughout the house. Each time they nicely matched the orange peel texture and feathered the work in so all it needed was paint. The work was neat, without a ton of dust left over after they cleaned up. I don't think their prices are rock bottom but the quality justifies the price. We would not hesitate to use them again.

I needed some drywall repair and painting done after my basement flooded. I would use Wall Doctor in the past and decided to call them for this job. I got a quick estimate and they were able to be on the job as soon as the basement was dried out. In addition to the repairs, I wanted a new wall and door built, and they worked with me to figure out the best way to design it. I had to leave on vacation in the middle of the job, but when I returned I found a beautiful new basement with paint colors and textures perfectly matched. I highly recommend the Wall Doctor!

We have chosen The Wall Doctor as our construction company for a wide range of home improvement, repair and remodeling projects over the several years. Previously, we were clients of the current owners, so our experience with this team of professionals dates back six or seven years. Projects have included repairing extensive water damage in our garage (including drywall and ceiling replacement), designing and building a complete utility room in our barn, re-siding and repainting our home, concrete work, fence repair, deck install, insulation install, etc. Their work is consistently of the highest quality, performed in a timely manner, and fairly priced. They are also great communicators. Their construction knowledge is exceptional and their craftsmanship is truly amazing!

I love the Wall Doctor. Several years ago I had them replace moisture damaged peak of my cathedral ceiling living room between two beams. They did a wonderful job (second time I had had it repaired) in a difficult place which has stood the test of time. So when I wanted the new project completed I only made one call. Jason came out promptly listened carefully to my desired revisions and talked to the cabinet man who happened to be here at the same time. The first crew came out and took out the old paneling and cupboards and roughed in the openings for the new cabinets after an e-mail exchanged of plans. When the window was ready and the cabinets completed another crew came out and completed the drywall and installation over a day and a half. My wallboard repair in the bedroom was also well done. The crew were business like and very neat. We can hardly wait to do our part, the painting and reassemble our family room. The Wall Doctor is really a general contractor who can supply crafts people to do a wide variety of services. I will not hesitate to call them again in the future.

Drywall repair completed in Bellevue

Most repair estimates come down to a handful of real-world factors:

  • Size and number of damaged areas
  • Wall patch vs. related ceiling work
  • Small repair vs. partial drywall replacement
  • Texture matching and finish detail
  • Whether the repair is post-leak after the source is fixed
  • Whether priming and painting are part of the job

Once we see the damage, we can tell you whether this is a simple patch, a larger repair, or something that needs more finish work to blend in properly.

Drywall Repair FAQ

How much does it cost to have drywall repaired?

Small, simple patches often cost $200-$500, while large holes or water damage repairs range from $500 to over $5,000. Most contractors will often have a minimum charge for them to take the job.

The main cost drivers are:

  • Size of the repair
  • Wall vs ceiling location
  • Finish level & paint matching
  • Number of patches or rooms

What is the best material for patching drywall?

Lightweight spackle is best for small nail holes and dents. Setting-type joint compound, often called "hot mud", works better for larger, deeper, or high-impact repairs because it dries harder, shrinks less, and sets faster. For larger holes, it is usually combined with fiber mesh tape for added strength.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace drywall?

Repairing drywall is generally cheaper and faster for minor damage such as small holes, cracks, and dents. Replacing drywall is more cost-effective for extensive damage like large holes, widespread water damage, or mold. Repeated repairs can cost more than replacing the damaged section.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

"Sheetrock" is a trademarked brand name, whereas "drywall" refers to the generic material (often called gypsum board or plasterboard). Think of it like comparing a brand name (like "Coca-Cola") to the generic term for a soft drink (like "coke").

Can I repair drywall myself?

Yes, you can absolutely repair drywall yourself. Small holes (nails, dents) are easily fixed with spackle, a putty knife, and sandpaper

When to hire a professional:

  • Repairs involving mold or extensive water damage.
  • Large holes involving structural damage.
  • Repairs on high, hard-to-reach ceilings.
  • Complex shapes or angles
  • If a perfectly invisible finish is required, as texture matching can be difficult.
